Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Limiting Your Life?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the bones of the wrist. This causes pain and numbness mainly in the index and middle fingers, and weakness in the thumb. There may be tingling and a sense of weakness in the hand and pain can extend to the forearm and elbow.

Carpal tunnel is often caused by repetitive strain injury from working at a computer. It is a type of Postural stress. Postural stress is the stress on our bodies as a result of inefficient posture, repetitive movements or prolonged time in the same positions; often as a result of work environments: factory production, hairdresser, typists, racquet sports.

The radius and ulna bones in the forearm are connection by a ligament which can become over-tight if the two bones begin to spread apart. This causes the ligament to press downwards onto the median nerves causing the pain.

METAPHYSICAL AWARENESS:

Your body is trying to communicate to you that it feels limited. Are you limiting your potential? Do you feel that you have lots of options and possibilities in your life or that you are stuck?

If this reasonates with you then repeat the following affirmations daily:

“ I am free to follow my destiny”

“ New opportunities come my way every day”

“ I have unlimited potential”

EXERCISES:

  • Try hard not to carry out an action that aggravates the problem. You may need to strap your wrist up daily to squeeze the arm bones together to take the pressure off the ligament. You can buy wrist straps at most chemists.
  • ‘Arm wrestle’ someone daily – without causing any more damage! – to strengthen the muscles.

NUTRITION:

B vitamins, especially B6 has been shown to greatly help carpal tunnel pain.

Eat B6 rich foods such as avocados, bananas, chick peas, fish and poultry or talk to your pharmacist about a supplement.

ESSENTIAL OILS:

The following oils can be made into a massage blend for the wrist and arm by adding 2 drops of each of the oils into 30mls of carrier oil such as grape seed or avocado oil. Massage daily until a relief in symptoms is felt.

  • Lavender
  • Ginger
  • Black Pepper

ALSO CHECK:

Blood sugar imbalances can effect carpal tunnel symptoms. Make sure you eat protein foods such as nuts, meats, beans, dairy products regularly and keep low on refined carbohydrates.

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can cause swelling of the synovial membranes of the carpal joints and cause Carpal tunnel symptoms, so please check with your Dr if you think this applies to you.
