Eating Healthy – are Salicylates your enemy?

Eating Healthy – Salicylates

One of my sons came up with a red dry rash around his mouth. Luckily I had kinesiology skills to test what had caused his rash and the test showed it was mango. He had eaten mango that morning so it all made sense, but further testing revealed that other foods containing salicylates were also an issue for him. With this wisdom we were able to link a mouth ulcer he had suffered to the brand of toothpaste he was using.

Salicylates are chemicals found in foods. They don’t cause an allergy as such, but a pharmacological reaction by effecting the central nervous system.

A lot of foods high in salicylates are considered ‘healthy’ and yet can cause some irritating symptoms in people. For example strawberries, pineapple and cucumber are all high in salicylates yet you probably think of these foods as good for you and your children.

Foods with high salicylate levels:

Rock melon

Strawberries

Chewing gum

Toothpaste

Herbs and spices

Oranges

Pineapple

Capsicum

Cucumber

Nuts

If you or your child suffer from one or more of the following symptoms – see if you can correlate these to your diet or use some basic Kinesiology muscle testing to ask your body if these are affecting your health.

Symptoms noted in people after consuming foods that contain salicylates:

Itchy skin/hives/rash

Stomach pains

Asthma, Headaches

Swelling of hands/face

Bed wetting

Fatigue, Cough

Sinusitis, Diarrhoea

Nausea, Hyperactivity

Memory loss, Depression

Mouth ulcers, Rash around mouth

It is not simply a question of avoiding foods high in salicylates as the amount of salicylate can vary from one variety of fruit to another and it can vary depending on whether the food is raw or cooked and what form it is in. For example; a whole fresh orange can cause a reaction, but canned orange or orange juice is tolerated. But often if a person cuts out these foods for 4 months and then reintroduces them once a week only can control a reaction. This is because the life cycle of a red blood cell is 120 days, so after this time no cell has been exposed to the salicylates and then if only eaten once a week it should stop an over loading which often causes the symptoms to appear again. Kinesiology can help you test which foods and in which form you are sensitive to.
