Angela was in her fifties and had suffered asthma all her life. During our consultation her body communicated that her health issues were connected to her mother. Angela explained that her mother had suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder for many years. When Angela was a child her mother was constantly telling her to ‘be careful’ and ‘stay safe’ – creating a belief that the world was a place to be feared. In recent years Angela said she’d felt apathetic towards her mother, not wanting to visit her, which led to a tremendous amount of guilt and the worsening of her asthma.
We used two powerful affirmations to address these issues. The first related to reversing any feelings of fear that were created in her childhood – “I am safe. The Universe protects me”.
The second related to her current relationship with her mother – “I can be a good daughter and have a life of my own”.
These affirmations resulted in Angela suffering from fewer, and less severe, asthma attacks.
What is asthma?
Asthma is a chronic condition involving inflammation of the airways, which causes symptoms of wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Asthma can be triggered by environmental pollutants, food sensitivities and stress. Many asthma attacks are mild and can be controlled at home. Severe attacks can result in hospitalisation.
The conventional approach
There are four main types of conventional treatments used for asthma: Relievers; Preventer medications; Symptom Controller medications; and Combination medications.
Relievers are fast acting medications that provide quick relief of asthma symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath. They work by relaxing the muscles around the outside of the airway. Side effects of this type of medication can include feelings of anxiety, increased heart rate and muscle tremors.
Preventer medications reduce sensitivity, swelling and redness in the airways. This type of medication needs to be taken daily to reduce symptoms and attacks. Some side effects include a sore throat, hoarse voice and oral thrush.
Symptom Controller medications help to relax the muscles around the airways and are taken twice daily. Usually this type of medication is prescribed for asthmatics who are already taking preventer medication but still have symptoms. These drugs can sometimes make asthma worse if they are taken incorrectly and can result in side effects such as headaches and increased heart rate.
Combination medications combine a preventer with a symptom controller in one device.
The Progressive Kinesiology approach
Asthma is a very serious health condition that can be caused by a number of factors. Kinesiology can help discover the root of the problem but sufferers should never stop taking asthma medication without first seeking medical advice.
There are several healing tools that I use to treat clients with asthma. The first thing to do is to use muscle testing to ask the client’s body what it needs to heal itself. Once the body has spoken, the treatment can begin. Here are some healing tools that I have used to help clients suffering from asthma:
Mind Body Awareness
The first breath we take is a symbolic separation from our mother. If as a child you felt you had to grow up too quickly due to inadequate mothering, you may be prone to asthma. Alternatively, if you had a mother who ‘smothered’ you or if you felt unworthy of your mother’s love, this can also lead to asthma.

Foods to Eat
- Whole grains, nuts and dark leafy greens are full of magnesium, which can help expand the airways.
- Fish oils can help reduce inflammation in the airways.
- Turmeric can be made into a tea as an anti-inflammatory.
- Green tea can help reduce inflammation.
Foods to Avoid
- Any products containing sulphites as preservatives such as: wine, beer, dried fruit and packaged products. Sulphites can cause allergy-like symptoms that can bring on asthma attacks.
Asthma relates to the Solar Plexus Chakra (yellow). When this chakra is unbalance you need to protect your energy field. Visualise a mirror between yourself and others, reflecting back their energy. You can also imagine yourself surrounded by light, which can not be penetrated by other’s thoughts, words or deeds.
